The Florida Highwaymen were a group of twenty-six African American artists who began making and selling paintings at the end of the 1950s. Working against the segregated conditions of the South, this largely untrained collective utilized intuitive and en plein air techniques to accomplish bright and vivid compositions that represent the Sunshine State's geography. The forthcoming presentation at Independent 20th Century provides the opportunity to recover and reframe this work in both contemporary and historical contexts, especially within the canon of American landscape painting
